Suspended on full pay, reports the Times.
He ducks, he dives, he evades and then he ends on a note of delusional pomposity. Yes, it’s Marc Garlasco, who concedes that he wrote a “handful” (actually, it was more than 7,000) of “juvenile” posts on a couple of online militaria forums, but wants us to remember that “because of the intense suffering during the Second World War and the genocidal campaign against the Jewish people, I spend my days doing what I can to ensure that such horrors are never allowed to happen again.”
Right. I guess that explains the sweatshirt.
Helena Cobban - a member of the Advisory Committee of Human Rights Watch and a trenchant critic of Israel for many years - isn’t impressed (and check out her earlier posts.) However, given that Garlasco could not be writing this kind of trash without HRW’s prior approval, it seems unlikely that Cobban’s concerns will register in the office of the organization’s boss, Ken Roth.

On May 10th, survivors of the concentration camp Ebensee were shot at with pellets and abused as they gathered to remember their liberation. Masked neo-Nazi thugs screamed ‘Heil Hitler!’ and ‘This way to the gas!’ at ten elderly Italian men and women who returned to the site of the concentration camp in Austria.

Austrian law prohibits public denial, belittlement, approval or justification of Nazi genocide or other Nazi crimes against humanity in a print publication, in broadcast, or in other media. The law prohibits public incitement to hostile acts against a church, religious society, or group because of its race, nationality, or ethnicity, if that incitement poses a danger to public order. It also prohibits incitement, insult, or contempt against these groups if it violates human dignity.

According to the Budapest daily Népszabadság, the Budapest district attorney’s office has decided that the Nazi propaganda film Jud Süss can be used for incitement, but only if shown to a sympathetic audience. There will therefore be no prosecution of the Neo-Nazi group which showed the film last July to a paying audience. The liberal party (SZDSZ) is protesting and is ready to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

It would appear that the antisemitic spirit of the Red Army Fraction (RAF) - aka the Baader Meinhoff Gang - is alive and well on the fringes of the German far left. (Have a look here to remind yourselves of the RAF’s role in the notorious Entebbe hijacking of 1976, a joint production with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and Ugandan tyrant Idi Amin.)
