Crushing Defeat for BDS conference in Montreal

This article is crossposted from the website of the Quebec-Israel Committee.

The Boycott-Israel conference that ended Sunday in Montreal was supposed to show the growing momentum for the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel. With barely 100 activists attending the closing plenary Sunday afternoon at UQAM, it is clear that the BDS movement has no noticeable traction or support in Quebec.

An Appeal to Progressive Canadians

Via Terry Glavin. More on Libby Davies, deputy leader and house leader of the opposition New Democratic Party in Canada, here.

ENOUGH

by Matt Godwin and Sam Konig

You have no doubt been reading about recent comments made by the NDP’s Deputy Leader, Libby Davies, who stated very clearly at an anti-Israel rally that the occupation of the Palestinian territories began in 1948, rather than in 1967. This kind of rhetoric is tantamount to declaring that Israel has no right to exist at all. As if this were not enough, she further declared her support for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against Israel. Many progressives and fellow New Democrats, including the NDP’s other Deputy Leader Thomas Mulcair, have condemned her remarks.

Israel Blamed for Saudi Misogyny

Let me just clarify then: Are you suggesting that Canada’s Israel policy could leave young Canadian women in limbo?”
Pardy: “Yes.”

More here. You can’t make this stuff up.

“Long Live The Taliban”

As Terry Glavin reports, on the surface these words don’t sit well with the mission statement of an organization that wants to prepare young Muslims to participate in a pluralistic society. But perhaps it’s inevitable when you bring Azzam “Kaboom” Tamimi into the mix. “Lurid theology unavoidably bleeds into toxic ideology, and nobody should be surprised that Tamimi has found a home for himself with the Al-Fauz institute,” writes Terry.

Climbing from the Gutter

UPDATE: Vildechaye provides the following clarification at Harry’s Place - third comment down

When I was a kid, one of my favorite books was “Tintin in Tibet”, a rollicking tale of how the tufted one treks through the Himalayas in order to rescue his pal Chang, the sole survivor of a plane crash. Published in 1959, the same year that Chinese forces crushed the Tibetan uprising, the book was not just a breathtaking introduction to the perils of mountaineering. It was instrumental in establishing an emotional bond between western readers and the Tibetan people. Indeed, the Dalai Lama recognized as much when he gave the book an award three years ago.

More Galloway

“What we’re missing in the George Galloway story is the George Galloway story,” begins Terry Glavin in this radio interview.” Terry then lists the cold facts which much of the Canadian media failed to pick up on. Have a listen.

Glavin on the Galloway Affair

Canada is not British, nor European, nor Yankee, and in all the foreign and domestic sniggerings, objections, protests and complaints about the way Canada and its officials have handled the Galloway file, you will have to look very hard before you find one - just one - that does not wholly depend upon an embarassing error of fact, a delusion, a conspiracy theory, or an outright lie.

Terry Glavin gets it absolutely right, here.

Galloway: Canada was Right

“There really hasn’t been a totalitarian regime in the last quarter century to which Galloway has failed to lend his support,” observes Michael Weiss in a robust defense of Canada’s decision to refuse entry to George Galloway, Saddam poodle and British MP.

Apparently, Galloway was in New York…

I wasn’t there. Only 100 people were. More from Gene here, who says that the banning of Saddam Hussein’s former poodle from Canada  “has turned what certainly would have been a quickly-forgotten tour into a cause celebre – much to Galloway’s delight, I’m sure.” True on one level, but I still think the Canadians were right to invoke their law, and send a message to this craven apologist for tyrants that supporting terrorism doesn’t go unpunished.

Banning the “Infandous” Galloway: Well Done, Canada!

Canada has banned the rabble-rousing anti-Zionist, pro-Saddam British MP George Galloway entry on the grounds that he is a threat to national security. Apparently, Galloway is livid. Good. Let him steam, because this was the right action to take, even if The Guardian can’t believe this is the Canadian government’s own decision - it was, as the footnote to this piece makes crystal clear - since Galloway’s vile statements were “drawn to the attention of the government by a Jewish group.”

Michael Ignatieff: Israel Apartheid Week is Demonization

Michael Ignatieff, leader of Canada’s Liberal Party and the author of several books on international politics and human rights (including the highly recommended Virtual War), has written an op-ed for the National Post slamming Israel Apartheid Week.

Israel Academic Boycott Urged by Canada Labor Leader

One of the more sinister aspects of the academic boycott campaign against Israel in the UK was its demand that Israeli academics take a disloyalty oath: that in order to engage in international collaboration with other academics, they had to first disavow their government. That tactic has now been imported to Canada.

Africa Event Snubbed Because of “Apartheid Israel”

The following story was kindly brought to my attention by Ariella Kimmel of the Canadian Federation of Jewish Students. It’s an object lesson in the totalitarian mindset which has taken hold of too many anti-Zionist activists - the same activists who shriek the words “free speech” when their own views are confronted.
