Vienna is Different

The city of Vienna launched a promotional campaign with the slogan “Wien ist anders”, “Vienna is different.” And Vienna after the Second World War was different, insofar as it did not welcome back its former Jewish citizens and tolerated antisemitism in politics and media for several decades.

Ahmadinejad the Assassin

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was part of a death squad that killed three Kurds in Austria, according to Green party security spokesman Peter Pilz. He said Ahmadinejad had been involved in the killings in Vienna in 1989 and may have pulled the trigger on one of the guns used to kill the men.

Goebbels’ Echo

On May 10th, survivors of the concentration camp Ebensee were shot at with pellets and abused as they gathered to remember their liberation. Masked neo-Nazi thugs screamed ‘Heil Hitler!’ and ‘This way to the gas!’ at ten elderly Italian men and women who returned to the site of the concentration camp in Austria.

Free Speech and the Far Right

Austrian law prohibits public denial, belittlement, approval or justification of Nazi genocide or other Nazi crimes against humanity in a print publication, in broadcast, or in other media. The law prohibits public incitement to hostile acts against a church, religious society, or group because of its race, nationality, or ethnicity, if that incitement poses a danger to public order. It also prohibits incitement, insult, or contempt against these groups if it violates human dignity.

A Challenge for the Church

Reading the news about the reintegration of a notorious Holocaust denier into the Catholic Church, as well as the open letter of Cardinal Christoph Schönborn to the Chief Rabbi of Austria and the Jewish community on the occasion of Holocaust Memorial Day, reminded me of my boyhood experiences at the elementary school in Baden bei Wien during the 1930s.

Antisemitic Tropes in Austria’s Top-Selling Daily

Racism and the Austrian Media

Between 1969 and 1992, Klaus Emmerich was the correspondent of ORF, the Austrian state television channel, in Washington DC. He also worked also for the Vienna daily Die Presse and for German media. On October 5, Emmerich, who retired a few years ago, was asked by the discussion club 2 of ORF to comment on Barack Obama. I wouldn’t want the Western world to be directed by a black man, he said “If you say that is a racist remark, that’s right, without a doubt!”
