Jews, not Israel, are the Islamists’ Target

This article by Winston Pickett was originally published in the UK Jewish Chronicle.

Now that the latest terror threat has been neutralized - with a little help from the Saudis - we’ve entered the predictable post mortem phase. This is the political scrum in which government, security, intelligence and law enforcement authorities scramble to apportion blame and devise strategies to keep air travel safe.

Yet More On The Coming War With Iran

I have no  special skills when it comes to predicting the future but I thought I might as well title this post as I have when it occurred to me that many, cough, anti-Zionists, would see three posts in four days about Iran as being a sure sign that something is up. After all, this  blog is sponsored by the AJC and hey, come on, we all know what that means….

CNN’s Al Qaeda Apologist

UPDATE: Martin Solomon adds, “Speaking of CNN, take a look at what happened when Rick Sanchez was interviewing Wolf Blitzer, and live responses to Sanchez’s Twitter feed were scrolling along the screen…take a look at the type of thing that made the air: From CNN’s lower third: ‘Jewish lobby runs America’

In my earlier post (here or join the debate at Harry’s Place,) I mentioned that my appearance this week on CNN was introduced with three clips about the evils of the Israel Lobby featuring Rami Khouri, Stephen Walt and Loretta Napoleoni. I added that I’d never heard of Napoleoni, but one of the Harry’s Place commenters, David Thompson, has. And he points out this miserable apologia for the late, unlamented Al Qaeda terrorist Abu Musab al Zarqawi which Napoleoni published in Socialist Worker, no less!

Here’s a flavor of what she has to say: “He showed strong leadership qualities and organisational skills. The inmates elected him their leader. People were impressed by his determination and his kindness. Once he personally bathed a mujahideen who had been injured and had lost a leg.”

Got the kleenex out yet?

Apparently, CNN International believes that this apologist for Zarqawi, the murderer of American troops and Iraqi civilians, both Shi’a and Sunni, can simultaneously be presented as an authoritative analyst of Middle East politics.

Bin Laden Fingers the Zionist Lobby

Over at the CST blog, eagle-eyed Dave Rich observes a particularly well-known habitué of Afghan caves recommending - eight years after the slaughter of 9/11 - that Americans read the works of Messrs. Mearsheimer and Walt. Writes Dave: “[T]hey cannot claim to be completely surprised that the leader of al-Qaeda has cited their book in support of his cause; after all, they cited him first, as evidence that the activities of the Israel Lobby were damaging American interests (‘There is no question that many al-Qaida leaders, including Osama bin Laden, are motivated by Israel’s presence in Jerusalem and the plight of the Palestinians.’)”

John Mann and Bernard-Henri Lévy Stand Up to Antisemitism

Antisemitism was a prominent focus of the American Jewish Committee’s Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Among the speakers were John Mann, the British MP who has spearheaded the global parliamentary fight against antisemitism, and Bernard-Henri Lévy, the French author and philosopher who has never lost sight of the centrality of antisemitism in his dissection of Islamism and its related ills.

Mindful of his audience, Mann declared: “Let me quote from Rosa Parks: ‘As I got up on the bus I saw that there was only one vacancy, so this was the seat that I took.’ This world and past generations are full of Rosa Parks. People going about their everyday business quietly and with dignity. But people not prepared to be bullied and cowered and intimidated. No doubt a little scared, but those who do their bit by doing what is right.”

You can read the entire speech here and watch highlights of it on YouTube here.

And here are some highlights of what BHL had to say, again on YouTube.

Daniel Pearl and the Normalization of Evil

This week marks the seventh anniversary of the brutal kidnapping and murder of the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. In the gruesome video which culminated in Pearl’s beheading by a gang of Islamist terrorists in Karachi, Pakistan, he was heard saying, “My father’s Jewish, my mother’s Jewish, I’m Jewish.”

Somalia: The Threat of Al Shabaab

This is a guest post by Michelle Sieff, Assistant Director of the American Jewish Committee’s Africa Institute.

The reputable International Crisis Group has issued a new report on Somalia, calling for engagement with Somalia’s Islamist insurgency - which now controls southern Somalia - when Ethiopian troops withdraw later this month.

Jos, Mumbai and Al Qaeda

This is a guest post by Michelle Sieff, Assistant Director of the American Jewish Committee’s Africa Institute.

Mumbai was not the only bleeding city last week. In Jos, Nigeria, located in the heart of what is called the “middle belt”, violence between Christian and Muslim mobs protesting what they said were rigged local elections resulted in 400 people dead and 7,000 more displaced.

Barack Baiting

This is a guest post by David Adler.

John Pilger, the ultra-left New Statesman columnist, infamously said, in regard to the 2004 Iraq insurgency, that “we cannot afford to be choosy” - i.e., that people of the left must support the Baath/jihadi assassins and bombers because they are arrayed against the forces of Empire. He was hardly alone in this view; Arundhati Roy and the British MP George Galloway argued much the same.
