David Hirsh On The The Livingstone Formulation

Readers will not want to let this article by David Hirsh escape them. In due course I hope to write something  of similar length, if not quality, on a related discursive phenomenon, the Gurvitz-Goldman doctrine.

Ben White’s three causes of modern anti-Semitism in the West:

    1) Israel’s actions
    2) pro-Israel Western media
    3) Europe’s history of anti-Semitism

I removed the link to Ben White’s piece which Joseph posted above. If any readers really want to consult his dross, they can google it. We’re not going to do anything which even inadvertently promotes a nasty fifth-rate antisemite like White. In any case, he’s banned from this blog.

Anti-semites are graded these days? what’s the criteria?

  4. 4 Ben Cohen

Oh, I dunno…wit? intelligence? panache? influence? White has precious little of any of these.

Gosh you sound a bit bitter. If you were so secure in your views then surely you would allow him to express his thoughts and enter into a reasonable discussion as opposed to lowering yourself to name calling. Incidentally I struggle to see White’s views as antisemetic, rather, an expression of the things he has witnessed first hand and a desire to see justice for a supressed people.

    Hi Whitey!

Ben: Did you ever get the extension built?

I think that accusing someone of being a fifth rate anti-semite needs justification. For example i have witnessed people trying to accuse Norman Finkelstein of being an Anti-Semite and worse a holocaust denyer because of his accurate commentary and work on the Holocaust industry even though he is A, Jewish and B, the child of holocaust survivors. I suppose that everyone who criticizes israel and its policies is an anti-semite in your views right?

So by your standards the Left wing in Israel who would and do agree with Ben White are also all Anti-Semitic? I suppose i am as well by your standards simply for pointing these things out.

If your going to accuse someone of being an Anti-Semite you need to be able to back it up with evidence before you try and make silly slanderous statements about them.

    Nope. Wrong.

But thats what you are saying by calling Ben White an Anti-Semite. You are clearly attacking someone who is not in any way an anti-semite simply because he has accurately outlined and criticized israel on many valid points.

I also notice you fail to address my points when i post them to you……

The fact is that using international law along with various other sources Ben has accurately criticized israel and nothing he has ever written is remotely anti-semitic unless of course you twist things to suite your purpose and try to make him out to be anti semitic which is just stupidity.

If I were to say “Irish Catholics are all sexually incontinent, deceitful, alcoholics and mentally enslaved by a foreign despot, Josef Ratzinger”

I guess most people would regard that statement (and me with it) as prejudiced/racist.

If I were then to point out that I myself am Irish and from a Catholic family would they all go,

“Ooops, terribly sorry, if I had known that I would never have taken that statement to show any kind of prejudice against Irish Catholics.” ??

Sorry! Ben C’s right, it’s not worth the read anyway.

RE: You are clearly attacking someone who is not in any way an anti-semite simply because he has accurately outlined and criticized israel on many valid points.

Your premise is flawed. I have read many posts by Ben White that go far beyond “accurately outlining and criticizing Israel on many valid points.” He singles Israel out, ignores far greater atrocities attributable to others — notably israel’s neighbours — and is quick to accuse Israel of crimes before evidence is in. That makes calling him — or at least his remarks — anti-semitic entirely appropriate.

And don’t even get me started on Finklestein. What can you say about someone who gives the enemies of his people every benefit of the doubt, and his own people none. He should be shunned. (And if he were Arab or Muslim and behaving as he does, shunning would be the least of his problems.) End of story.

    White’s scribblings are irrelevant.

Whereas Dr Hirsh’s discussion of antisemitism, its subtleties and the motifs of racism is enjoyable and challenging.
