Whatever the truth of what happened here, this is just one more nail in the coffin of emotional affinity between large segments of American Jewish thought (especially the young) and Israel.

Eric G. “Whatever the truth of what at 9:56 am happened here, this is just one more nail in the coffin of emotional affinity between large segments of American Jewish thought (especially the young) and Israel.”

“Whatever the truth?” In other words to Eric it doesn’t matter what the truth is. To most in the Jewish community, “including the young,” the truth matters a great deal. What happens shows the violent and extremist nature of those who participated in the pro Hamas flotilla.

Btw: you can always tell an anti-Israel activist by the way the repeat phrases that they consider anti-Israel. Eric borrowed a phrase from Beinart’s article which is supposed to show that Young American Jews are alienated from Israel. It turns out that that is far from true:

“Wrong Numbers: Peter Beinart’s argument about Israel and liberal American Jews is built on misread data” By Theodore Sasson and Leonard Saxe

In any case, the truth is what matters and in this incident the pro Hamas flotilla activists attacked the Israeli soldiers who boarded the ships.

J Arnon: linking to a CNN piece which is captioned “Israeli military gives version of flotilla incident” is not evidence of truth.

fyi, I am very much pro-Israel, and my views about the growing chasm between Diaspora Jewry and Israel are my own, not Beinart’s.

“fyi, I am very much pro-Israel,”

The definition of being pro-Israeli is no longer a clear one, after J-street’s re-formulation of what “pro-Israelism” is. And the tone and substance of your comments suggest a j-streetarian inclination.

BTW, if you have such a cavalier approach to the importance of truth, you cannot be overly concerned over justice. If there is no truth, or no importance to truth, then there is no justice, or justice does not matter.

I believe that one can be pro-Israel and also be critical of some actions of Israel such as this fiasco.

Eric, it seems that for you as for J-Street, calling yourself “pro-Israel” while bashing Israel at every opportunity you get is credible and logical. It ain’t. Israel was engaged in self-defense against the violent supporters of a terrorist organization sworn to its destruction. If you can find a moment when you’re not agonizing over these young liberal Jews for whom the legitimate and moderate use of force is apparently so alienating, perhaps you might explain to us what you think Israel should, you know, have done.

I don’t know the alternatives the Israelis had, but I stand by my comment that this was a fiasco. I will go further: it was an unmitigated disaster, not for American Jews but for Israel.
