Over at the CST blog, eagle-eyed Dave Rich observes a particularly well-known habitué of Afghan caves recommending - eight years after the slaughter of 9/11 - that Americans read the works of Messrs. Mearsheimer and Walt. Writes Dave: “[T]hey cannot claim to be completely surprised that the leader of al-Qaeda has cited their book in support of his cause; after all, they cited him first, as evidence that the activities of the Israel Lobby were damaging American interests (‘There is no question that many al-Qaida leaders, including Osama bin Laden, are motivated by Israel’s presence in Jerusalem and the plight of the Palestinians.’)”

Walt took umbrage at being endorsed by Osama:
he said in part:
“While it is usually gratifying to get kudos for your work, that is certainly not the case in this instance, given what bin Laden has done in the past and given what he stands for. I just wish we had captured him long ago, making it impossible for him to issue any statements to the world.”

Walt doesn’t get off that easy.
He may not like the endorsement fro m his soul mate (on Israel) Osama but the fact is that both of them do share the antisemitic view (along with the Protocols of the elders of Zion) of inordinate Jewish influence in the world. In this he should be compared to Henry Ford or Charles Lindbergh who also raved about a Jewish lobby. In Ford’s case his book got the endorsement of Adolf Hitler.
Walt may spin his view as non antisemitic all he wants but Osama knows better.
Walt’s attempt to see his views as similar to those of Dershowitz or Goldwater is merely another one of his attempt to refuse to see the antisemitic implications of what he has written. Osama didn’t quote Dershowitz he quoted Walt.
Delicious, I love it — wonderful endorsement for Walt/Mearsheimer…
