Great piece. It reminded me why some starry-eyed Western observers have been foolish to look to the Rafsanjani clan as a source of moderation. And genuine reformers inside Iran can’t line up behind him either. Khamenei could easily crush him and the Iranian people wouldn’t be even slightly pained. They’d remember him as Iran’s single most corrupt theocrat and nothing more.
