Despite the brutal clampdown on their post-election uprising, Iranians of all walks of life are continuing to insist on the sovereignty of the ballot and the rule of law. By mobilizing its mighty technologies of repression, the putschist regime has successfully reasserted control of Iran’s streets and campuses - for now. But the Islamic Republic has completely lost what little legitimacy it had before June 12th. The rest of the world, too, has been forced to see the IRI for exactly what it is: a permanent pariah in the international community, a rogue state willing to murder its own citizens in cold blood.
Never before has the Iranian leadership - and, indeed, the very notion of the “guardianship of the jurisconsult” - been this vulnerable. Therefore, it’s important that we in the West continue to show our support for and solidarity with the Iranian people in their struggle for democracy and human right. July 25th has been designated a Global Day of Action for Iran. Events are scheduled to be held across the globe - I urge you to visit United4Iran to find and join rallies in your area. Believe me, your participation means a great deal to my compatriots since it lets them know that they are not alone. And if you happen to reside in Greater Boston, I’ll see you at Copley Square!
