Jews Behaving Normally Redux:the IDF in Gaza

1.

There has been much talk in the press in recent days relating to “revelations” about the behavior of some members of the IDF in Gaza. I put the word revelations in brackets above because nobody who knows anything about warfare can have imagined that sending large numbers of well-equipped combat troops to fight against irregulars in built up areas was going to produce anything but a significant number of civilian deaths.

Banning the “Infandous” Galloway: Well Done, Canada!

Canada has banned the rabble-rousing anti-Zionist, pro-Saddam British MP George Galloway entry on the grounds that he is a threat to national security. Apparently, Galloway is livid. Good. Let him steam, because this was the right action to take, even if The Guardian can’t believe this is the Canadian government’s own decision - it was, as the footnote to this piece makes crystal clear - since Galloway’s vile statements were “drawn to the attention of the government by a Jewish group.”

Helpful Advice from Richard Falk

This is a guest post by Doug Lieb of AJC, editor of the new blog Durban Countdown.

Richard Falk, the UN Special Rapporteur for human rights in the Palestinian territories - previously known for his doubts about what really happened on 9/11 - has just come out with another novel theory.

Reach Out To Iran’s People

This is a guest post by ganselmi.

In an earlier post, Ben highlighted my comment on the nature of the Iranian regime. I have to say: I wish I could reveal my real name the way Ben and the other Z Word bloggers can. But the very fact that I — like most other dissident bloggers within and outside Iran — have to be so careful in dealing with the IRI is itself a testament to just how dangerous this regime is. Which is why I wish some of our friends on the left weren’t so singularly devoted to condemning the US and Israel as to delude themselves about the openly-declared aims and intentions of Khamenei, Ahmadinejad et al. But I also want to say something else.

Gaza and the Surge of Antisemitism

The Institute for Global Jewish Affairs has published a fine study on the upsurge in antisemitism which followed the recent Gaza war, authored by Manfred Gerstenfeld and Tamas Berzi.

“Hellish” Iran: A Note to Roger Cohen

It’s rare for us to highlight the comments on this blog, but I did want to draw your attention to this one on a recent piece by Eamonn. “I was born to a secular Muslim family in Iran and lived there until I was fourteen,” says a contributor named ganselmi. “I still have family back there. And I will say that the current regime in Iran makes life absolutely hellish, not just for Jews, Armenians, and Baha’is, but for all Iranians. To minimize the IRI’s Islamist brutality — especially from those who should know better — is simply inexcusable.”

Churchill Play Comes To NY Radio

This is a guest post by David Adler.

This Sunday, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ), the New York-based activist group, will dedicate part of its weekly WBAI radio program Beyond the Pale to a live reading of Caryl Churchill’s play Seven Jewish Children, to be followed by a discussion with the actors.

More on Ken Loach

You have to read this. Utterly brilliant.

It’s Not Genocide, Honest…

Declaring in the LA Times that “the problem is Zionism,” novelist Ben Ehrenreich opens his article with a 1944 quote from the then President of the American Council for Judaism describing the goal of a Jewish state as a “Hitlerian concept.” This is yet another display of what is fast becoming a tiresome rhetorical technique; that words uttered against Zionism by a Jew contain intrinsic merit and privileged insight.

Durban Delirium

I have never pictured AJC, the organization which sponsors Z Word, and where I proudly work, as being driven by a particularly American Jewish “psychopathology;” nor have I ever been aware that AJC actively colludes with those who seek to wipe Israel out of existence; nor did I know that my colleagues would sit happily in the same room as those who would deny the Holocaust in which six million Jews, including members of my own family, were exterminated.

Afghanistan’s Corruptions

Terry Glavin relates that when writer Michael Weiss “went looking for a welcoming home for his excellent inquiry into the toxicity of Afghanistan’s corruption - and its implications for capital investment, the rule of law, and the development of democratic institutions - he found it not in Harper’s Magazine, or The Atlantic, but rather in New Majority, a project aimed at breathing life back into America’s intellectually and morally exhausted Republican Party.” It is an indeed an excellent enquiry - read it and ponder why those publications which should have grabbed it didn’t.

Roger Cohen, Tame Jews and Iran

In Roger Cohen’s latest column he defends himself from critics who have attacked his recent writing on Iran as being too soft on the regime currently running that country and as taking an excessively sanguine view of the situation of its Jewish minority.

Terrorism in Northern Ireland and Israel

Writing about the recent murders committed by terrorist groups in Northern Ireland, Terry Glavin says that,

… nationalist support for the armed campaign waged by the Irish Republican Army between 1969 and 1994 was grounded in the demand for British withdrawal from Ulster, and for Irish self-determination.
