Many, many different people wrote in about Freeman. Most of those people are well to the left of me politically (in fact I know several of them would prefer a one state solution--something Freeman never advocated to the best of my knowledge). But they wrote in to oppose the Freeman nomination. Because it wasn't what Freeman thought about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that so troubled them (and me); it's what he seems to have thought about American Jews.
