Holocaust Memorial Day: Embracing the Devil

The man with his back to the camera is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian President. The man warmly hugging him is Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, President of the UN General Assembly. The occasion for their embrace was Ahmadinejad’s viciously antisemitic speech at the UN last September.

D’Escoto is no stranger to the tropes of Jew hatred, having claimed that the Palestinians “are being crucified” by Israel. Despite that, he is set to open the Holocaust Memorial Day ceremonies at UN HQ here in New York tomorrow.

“Sources in the Israeli delegation to the UN expressed concern Sunday that D’Escoto might use the opportunity to attack Israel or draw comparisons between Israel’s’ actions in the territories and the Holocaust,” reports Ynet. “Jewish organizations in New York were also outraged by D’Escoto’s intention to speak at the service, and released a letter calling on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to prevent the president from speaking at the event, which is also set to host many Holocaust survivors.”

If UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon wants to avoid the violation of the UN’s own commemoration ceremonies, he should tell D’Escoto to steer clear. This is one event where he’s not wanted.
