Shah Zaman Khan runs the press operation for the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. And he is expressing what might be politely called “eccentric” views about the Mumbai atrocities in December - views which would doubtless be echoed by many of those who joined the pro-Hamas demonstrations in various cities over the weekend.

In an article headlined “The Link Between Mumbai Attacks and Gaza,” he says:

What we have seen in Mumbai is altogether a third party conspiracy. There is one common enemy that does not want India and Pakistan to be friends.

Asked to elaborate:

In order to promote their arms and ammunition, some powers are trying to ignite war between India and Pakistan. The arms lobby is forcing these powers to go with the “divide and rule” policy.

Now, it’s true that he doesn’t say “Zionist” or “Jewish” lobby. But this kind of speculation is certainly grist to the mill of the website, the Pakistan Daily, which published his remarks and which says elsewhere that the slaughter in Mumbai was the work of Mossad.

Another article, this time about the Bernard Madoff scandal, is even more explicit:

From bankruptcy to bankruptcy, from swindle to swindle, from one insurance fraud to the next — the aggregate wealth of the Jewish community permanently grows thanks to intra-Jewish philanthropy. Yes, Spielberg and Yeshiva University lost some cash in this debacle, but otherwise, billions of dollars came in and remained within the Jewish community. One may view Madoff as a Jewish suicide bomber: he blew himself up financially, and the immediate losses to a few Jewish investors were just so much collateral damage. But the bottom line was a major, permanent transfer of gentile wealth to the Jews.

You have to strain to make out the byline at the end of this most exotic strain of antisemitism. But it is there, clear and unmistakeable: “I. Shamir.”

Perhaps the publishers were reluctant to explain that the “I” stands for “Israel.” If so, some more delicious irony: this man - who promotes the blood libel, who shouts from the rooftops about his conversion to orthodox Christianity, who never misses an opportunity to declare his loathing of Jews - is held at arms length by those he is so desperate to ingratiate himself with. And all because his first name (would he call it his “Christian” name?) is, as Jackie Mason might quip, “too Jewish.”

One for the psychologists, I think.
