Turning the Other Cheek

On the BBC, possibly some of the most bizarre news footage I’ve seen in a while, at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Reports the Beeb:

“Fighting erupted between Greek Orthodox and Armenian monks at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the traditional site of Christ’s crucifixion.

Two monks from each side were detained as dozens of worshippers traded kicks and punches at the shrine, said police.

Trouble flared as Armenians prepared to mark the annual Feast of the Cross.

Shocked pilgrims looked on as decorations and tapestries were toppled during Sunday’s clash.

Dressed in the vestments of the Greek Orthodox and Armenian denominations, rival monks threw punches and anything they could lay their hands on.”

Watch the video and you’ll see Israeli police and soldiers trying to break up what was really a furious battle. No doubt, someone, somewhere, will blame the “Zionist authorities” for what happened.

Incidentally, it’s not the first time.

    So what’s new?

It is no coincidence that there is a permanent police presence right outside the church.

The combatants in green, by the way, are not soldiers but border police (Magav).
