Africa, 25 Years from Now

Since we have entered one of those periods when everyone and their dog has an opinion about what the future holds, I want to highlight an excellent piece by Z Word contributor Michelle Sieff which employs rigor and analytical substance, rather than political astrology, to glimpse the continent of Africa one quarter of a century from now.

Writing in the World Policy Journal, Michelle counsels against the apocalyptic pessimism which often accompanies interpretations of African affairs. Both democracy and economic prosperity will spread, albeit haltingly. At the same time, Michelle points to two transnational problems which threaten Africa’s security: organized crime cartels and radical Islamist movements which have already brought havoc and suffering from Algeria to Somalia.

Do read it all. And do also take a look at Michelle’s Z Word essay on anti-Zionism in Africa.
