Jewish Anti-Zionists: From Vanity to Lunacy

Here we go again.

“For some of us, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a time for reflection and atonement for the individual and collective injustices we have committed or have allowed to happen. Through taking collective responsibility we seek a year of greater possibility for justice in Palestine, the broader region and our world.”

This from the statement announcing a month of action by what purports to be an international network of Jewish anti-Zionists. I can find precious little about justice in the “broader region” (no mention of Hamas repression against trade unionists, nor of the state-sponsored campaign of persecution against gays in Iran) nor, indeed, “our world” (where should I begin?)

There is plenty of the usual nonsense about “confronting Zionism” through boycott campaigns (”Sticker Israeli products using the provided on-line stickers or create your own,”) confrontations with Jewish organizations (”Organize a rally or direct action to target ‘Jewish’ institutions that confuse support of Israel with the defense of Jews, disguising political and economic support of Israel as Jewish cultural and community work,”) and the appropriation of Jewish religious traditions for the twin sided coin of self-love and self-loathing which Jewish anti-Zionism represents (”Organize a public taschlit [sic] service, a ritual that symbolizes the casting away of our misdeeds, to spiritually divest from Zionist narratives and mythology and to atone for the ways that we have fallen short in countering them in the past year.”) Just one point here, people - it’s called tashLICH.

For those activists hell-bent on becoming Che Guevara for a day, there are the frankly sinister-sounding “Popular Tribunals.” Inspired by the model of the Cairo Conference - whose rhetoric, as Terry Glavin has pointed out, “reads like a pre-nuptial agreement between Islamism and socialism” - the proceedings end with a “‘ruling’ on the reparations or actions to be demanded from the perpetrators of violence.”

The furious bluster used to announce these antics makes them even more ludicrous. There’s certainly no debate to be had here. If we need to pay attention to anything, it’s the possible - and very low-level - security threat these misfits represent. Grocery store owners catching them plastering Israeli oranges with stickers should reach for the nearest phone and call the cops - malicious damage, this is called. More gravely, if Jewish welfare organizations are targeted for being “Zionist,” then so too could Jewish community centers and schools. Communal security groups should - and, we can expect, will - take note.

At this point, though, the greatest challenge these daring revolutionaries are facing is what to call themselves. These are some of the names under consideration:

  • Mama 5 ( based on Hagar, the fifth mother in Genesis)
  • Diaspora Uprising
  • Hagar Uprising
  • Exodus

As to the first three, you have to admire anyone who stares ridicule in the face by owning up to these. As to the fourth, that has to be a copyright issue, if not for God, then for the estate of Bob Marley.

Ben, I think you embarrassed them - the
“some of the names under consideration” page is no more.
