McCartney: I’ll Play Israel

In the old “John or Paul?” debate, I always rooted for John. And I think I did so - as did many others - more as a judgment on their solo careers, rather than on their contributions to The Beatles. Lennon wrote some fantastic material on his own. His full-throated cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” is a masterpiece. McCartney gave us “Mull of Kintyre.”

But hey, that’s rock ‘n’ roll, and we’re here for the politics. Lennon, sadly, is no longer with us, cruelly felled by an assassin’s bullet. McCartney is still going strong and is about to play in Israel, despite entreaties not to from the boycotters. In an interview with Reuters, he says:

“I was approached by different groups and political bodies who asked me not to come here. I refused. I do what I think, and I have many friends who support Israel.”

McCartney plays Tel Aviv on September 25. Hopefully, the audience will get to hear some of the songs which The Beatles were unable to perform in Israel back in 1965. And that he’ll spare them “Ebony and Ivory.”
