As quoted in Beyond Chutzpah, Dershowitz, without citing any sources, calls the massacre an ” ‘isolated although inexcusable and tragic blemish’ ” and claims that ” ‘Deir Yassin stands out in the history of Arab-Jewish conflict … precisely because it was so unusual and so out of character for the Jews.’ ” Against this, Finkelstein quotes multiple passages from the noted Israeli historian and, paradoxically, Zionist apologist Benny Morris to the effect that ” ‘Jewish atrocities’ were ‘far more widespread than the old histories have let on’ ” and ” ‘Jewish atrocities against Arabs … were generally unconnected to or lacked any previous direct, Arab provocation.’ “Of course, Arabs have long known about Zionist-perpetrated massacres and other atrocities; if only we’d listen.”
