Female passengers aboard the two ships travelling to “break the siege of Gaza,” be warned: should you get there, showing any flesh will be frowned upon by the Hamas masters of the territory.

Writing in today’s Financial Times about the Hamas controlled Al-Aqsa TV station, Tobias Buck notes that when “al-Aqsa broadcast live football matches during this year’s European Championships on its terrestrial channel, it had to appoint a dedicated official charged with hastily cutting in full-screen adverts as soon as the camera panned on to the spectators. The risk of showing an uncovered, scantily dressed female football fan in the crowd was just too great.”

That’s not the half of it. While Buck says that the channel’s programming is “controversial” (which means a steady diet of Holocaust denial and a children’s show featuring a George Bush puppet being stabbed to death,) he doesn’t really communicate just how breathtakingly noxious it is. Buck may be impressed by the “swirling graphics and thumping music that would not look out of place on Fox News,” but what is that supposed to tell us? Joseph Goebbels didn’t compromise on production values either.

FT readers will get plenty of of exposure to the thoughts of the station’s managers - how they don’t “belong” to Hamas, how their mission is to broadcast Palestinian suffering, what a shame it is that they don’t have any correspondents in Europe or the US. Yet nowhere in the article is the question of whether this is legitimate journalism ever raised.

After all, this is a station which put the two small children of a female suicide bomber in front of an interviewer, resulting in the following exchange:

“What did mama do?”

“She committed martyrdom.”

“She killed Jews, right? How many did she kill, Muhammed?”

“Uh?”

“How many Jews did Mama kill?”

“This many” (holds up hand.)

“How many is that?”

“Five.”

This, as Gene noted at the time, is nothing short of child abuse. So let’s not fool ourselves into thinking that Al-Aqsa TV is a mould-breaking broadcaster with some unfortunate ideological teething problems. It is an arm of Hamas and its genocidal ambitions.
