South Africa Scarred

As racist violence rages across the streets of Johannesburg and Cape Town, it’s enlightening to learn about some of the other policy priorities of the ruling African National Congress.

A few days ago, the ANC endorsed a newspaper advert denouncing - of course - Israeli apartheid. The wonderfully eloquent It’s Almost Supernatural has this to say:

“That the ruling political party in South Africa should stoop to these childish levels of incitement should be a concern to all South Africans; not just Jews. By officially equating Israel with the evils of apartheid the ANC is questioning the ideological legitimacy of the overwhelming majority of Jews in South Africa. Without that legitimacy, can we expect the ANC to deal with us fairly and equitably?”

A salient point, and one of the concerns reflected in our recent Z Word essay, “Franchising Apartheid.”

Incidentally, It’s Almost Supernatural also has excellent coverage of the real issue today in South Africa, as troops are finally deployed - 40 people murdered and 15,000 driven from their homes during the current pogroms against foreigners. Helpfully, they also provide details of how the Jewish community in South Africa is helping the victims. Whether you live inside or outside SA, do have a look.
