That said, the anti-semitic taunts he was subjected to are indeed appalling. Soccer hooliganism has been a widespread problem for decades. For some strange reason a certain portion of soccer fans seem far more intent on expressing hatred and violence in support of their team, then, say, baseball fans or any one else. Witness the Jewish soccer hooligans in Israel who support their team while chanting "Death to Arabs" and "Arabs to the gas." I suggest a wider focus would have been more enlightening. I'm not a fan (in a family of Chelsea obsessives) but even I found the last moments of that final absolutely riveting. It could have gone either way, but the way the press has been full of articles declaring Avram's fate in the balance is, I feel, antisemitic. No other manager would be held to such impossibly high standards. By the way, did you know his late mother was Iraqi? Great piece, Ben.
